About Tom
Tom was born and raised in a strong faith-based family in Muncie, Indiana. Both his father and his grandfather were Baptist ministers. He went on to become the first in his family to graduate from college, receiving a Bachelor of Arts degree from Wabash College, a small all-male liberal arts college in Crawfordsville, Indiana. Over his professional life Tom has continued to enhance his education and skill sets receiving the following Certifications and Designations:
- Not for-Profit Accounting and Governmental Reporting, New York University
- Certified Association Executive (CAE)
- Project Management Professional (PMP)
- Georgia Municipal Association Certificate of Recognition
- Georgia Municipal Association Certificate of Achievement
After college Tom accepted a position with the IBM Corporation as a systems engineer. He spent 23 years with IBM, retiring as an Executive Project Manager in 2004. After IBM, Tom had a chance to change an avocation into a vocation when he accepted a job with the Eastern Section of the United States Tennis Association. He retired from USTA Eastern in 2013 as the Managing Director of Finance and Information Technology.
Tom has been involved in civic and community activities his entire adult life; volunteering with Junior Achievement and Big Brothers and assuming positions of leadership with the following organizations:
- Vice President, Booker T. Washington Business Association, Detroit, Michigan
- Leadership Detroit
- Director of Tennis Programs, Jerry Alleyne Memorial Foundation, New York
- President, Savannah Quarters Fairways Home Owners Association
- Councilman and Mayor Pro Tem for the city of Pooler
- Chairman and Organizer of the Pooler Juneteenth Celebration Committee
Tom is an accomplished tennis player and coach and has played or coached in 18 USTA National Championships. In 2012 his junior tennis team won the 18 & Under National Junior Team Tennis Championships. He is currently a tennis teaching professional working with the Pooler Recreation Department. He holds professional level certifications with the Professional Tennis Registry (PTR). In 2015 he was selected as the ‘2014 Tennis Man of the Year’ by USTA Eastern for his accomplishments in community tennis, highlighting the work he has done with young people.
Tom has been married to his wife Becky for 40+ years. They have three children, and six grandchildren. In 2014 they relocated to Pooler. When Tom is not busy teaching or playing tennis, he enjoys church activities, traveling, spending time with grandchildren, music, watching sports, and going to concerts and movies. He and Becky are members of the Calvary Baptist Temple church.
